Sarga 55

"dagdhēyaṁ nagarī sarvā!" means the whole of the city got burnt; Not only that, "sāṭṭaprākāra tōraṇāt "It got burnt along with the ramparts and arches.

Who is saying that? Charanas, the travelers of the skies.
They add in amazement,"jānakī na ca dagdhēti","that Janaki was not burnt"; That Janaki is safe is the news. That dissolved the tension of Hanuma.

Sarga 55 is about the concerns that engulf Hanuma
after having torched Lanka literally without thinking of the safety of Sita. We hear wonderful words from the poet about frailties of a human being consumed by anger.

Now we start with Slokas of Sarga 55

||Sloka 55.01||

laṁkāṁ samastāṁ saṁdīpya lāṁgulāgniṁ mahābalaḥ|
nirvāpayāmāsa tadā samudrē harisattamaḥ||55.01||

sa|| mahābalaḥ harisattamaḥ laṁkāṁ samastāṁ saṁdīpya tadā samudrē lāṁgūlāgniṁ nirvāpayāmāsa||

mahābalaḥ harisattamaḥ -
mighty Hanuman
laṁkāṁ samastāṁ saṁdīpya -
having burnt whole of Lanka
lāṁgūlāgniṁ - the fire on his tail
tadā samudrē nirvāpayāmāsa-
then tried to put (it) off in the ocean

||Sloka summary||

"The mighty Hanuman having burnt whole of Lanka then tried to put off the fire on his tail in the ocean." ||55.01||

Hanuman who was referred by citizens of Lanka in words saying, 'na vānarō'yaṁ svayamēva kālaḥ' ; meaning that this is not a Vanara , but Got of Death in person; having burnt Lanka, then trying to extinguish the fire at the tip of his tail, started thinking looking back at the havoc he caused.

saṁdīpyamānāṁ vidhvastāṁ trastarakṣōgaṇāṁ purīm|
avēkṣya hanumān laṁkāṁ ciṁtayāmāsa vānaraḥ||55.02||

sa|| saṁdīpyamānāṁ vidhvastāṁ trasta rakṣōgaṇāṁ laṁkā purīṁ āvēkṣya vānaraḥ ciṁtayāmāsa||

tasyābhūt sumahāṁstrāsaḥ kutsā cā'tmanyajāyata|
laṁkāṁ pradahatā karmakiṁsvitkr̥tamidaṁ mayā||55.03||

|| tasya mahān trāsaḥ abhūt |ātmani kutsā ca ajāyata| laṁkāṁ pradahatā mayā idaṁ kiṁsvit karma kr̥taṁ||

tasya mahān trāsaḥ abhūt -
a great fear overtook him
ātmani kutsā ca ajāyata -
self-reproach was felt
laṁkāṁ pradahatā -
by burning Lanka
mayā idaṁ kiṁsvit karma kr̥taṁ -
what was done by me ?

||Sloka summary||

"A great fear overtook him within in his mind. Self-reproach was felt. ' By burning Lanka what did I do ?". ||55.03||

Seeing the burning the city of Lanka, seeing also the panic-stricken Rakshasas, Hanuma started thinking.

Here poet says 'kutsā cātmanyajāyata'.; in that thinking process, self-contempt got triggered, in Hanuma.

When Hanuma starts thinking, he gets a big fright. Why? Seeing burning Lanka, there was a flicker of thought; 'Did I burn Sita also in the fire that burnt Lanka?'

That thought was a flash. Suddenly Hanuma was overwhelmed by a wave of self-contempt. With that wave of self-contempt Hanuma continues to reproach himself.

||Sloka 55.04||

dhanyāstē puruṣaśrēṣṭhā yē budhyā kōpamutthitam|
nirunthanti mahātmānō dīptamagnimivāṁbhasā||55.04||

sa|| tē puruṣaśrēṣṭhāḥ mahātmanaḥ dhanyāḥ yē utthitaṁ kōphaṁ buddhyā nirundhanti dīpaṁ agniṁ aṁbhasā iva||

Rama Tika says - yē mahātmanaḥ ati prayatna śīlāḥ utthitaṁ kōpaṁ aṁbhasā buddhyā nirundhantī tē mahātmanaḥ puruṣaśrēṣṭhāḥ api ata ēva dhanyāḥ|

yē utthitaṁ kōphaṁ buddhyā nirundhanti -
those who put out the rising anger by their wisdom
dīpaṁ agniṁ aṁbhasā iva -

Hanuma continues his introspection.

kruddhaḥ pāpaṁ na kuryātkaḥ kruddhō hanyādgurūnapi|
kruddhaḥ paruṣayāvācā naraḥ sādhūnadhikṣipēt||55.05||

sa|| kr̥ddhaḥ kaḥ pāpaṁ na kuryāt | kr̥ddhaḥ gurūn api hanyāt | kr̥ddhaḥ naraḥ paruṣayāvācā sādhūn adhikṣipēt||

Rama Tika says- prakupitō janaḥ vācyā avācyaṁ vijānāti |

Rama Tika says - angry one loses his capability to distinguish between good and bad.

vācyā vācyaṁ prakupitō na vijānāti karhicit|
nākāryamasti kruddhasya nāvācyaṁ vidyatē kvacit||55.06||

sa|| prakupitaḥ karhicēt vācyāvācyaṁ na vijānāti | kr̥ddhasya akāryaṁ na asti|avācyaṁ na vidyatē||

angry one at any time
vācyā avācyaṁ na vijānāti -
not know what can be said and what cannot be said.

||Sloka 55.07||

yaḥ samutpatitaṁ krōdhaṁ kṣamayaiva nirasyati|
yathōragastvacaṁ jīrṇāṁ sa vai puruṣa ucyatē||55.07||

sa|| uragaḥ jīrṇāṁ tvacaṁ yathā yaḥ samutpatitaṁ krōdhaṁ kṣamayā ēva nirasyati saḥ vai puruṣaḥ ucyatē||

Govindaraja Tika says - uragō jīrṇāṁ tvacamēva, samutpatitaṁ kōpaṁ yaḥ nirasyati sa ēva puruṣa ucyatē|

||Sloka meanings||

uragaḥ jīrṇāṁ tvacaṁ yathā -
like a snake shedding its worn-out skin
samutpatitaṁ krōdhaṁ -
the rising anger
yaḥ kṣamayā ēva nirasyati -
the one who drives (it) away with tolerance
saḥ vai puruṣaḥ ucyatē -
he alone is called a truly wise man"

"Like a snake sheds its worn-out skin, the one who drives away the rising anger with tolerance he alone is called a truly wise man".||55.07||

We can Summarize Hanuma thoughts as follows:

' By burning Lanka what did I do? Those who quenched the rising anger by their wisdom, like a burning fire is put out by water, are blessed. They are best of men and great souls.'

'What sin, the angry one will not perform. The angry one will kill even the teacher. The angry one will insult good people with harsh words. An angry one will not know to differentiate between what can be said and what cannot be said'.

'For the angry one there no act that is barred. There is no word that cannot be said. The one who sheds the rising anger with tolerance, like a snake sheds its skin, he alone is called a truly wise man'.

In these few lines, through Hanuma, the poet enunciates a signal truth of life. Anger is the root cause of many calamities.

Here Hanuma realizes the consequences of anger, and concludes the one who sheds his anger is the real person.

We hear the same in Bhagavad-Gita too.

"krōdhāt bhavati sammōhaḥ
sammōhāt smr̥ti vibhramaḥ|
smr̥ti bhraṁśāt buddhināśō
buddhi nāśāt praṇasyati ||" ( Gita Ref)

This is an undeniable truth across the ages. This is heard in many places. Ramayan being the first epic poem, we can say that this truth may have come in Ramayana first.

Hanuma continues his soliloquy.

||Sloka 55.08||

dhigastu māṁ sudurbuddhiṁ nirlajjaṁ pāpakr̥ttamam|
acintayitvā tāṁ sītāṁ agnidaṁ svāmighātukam||55.08||

sa|| tāṁ sītāṁ acintayitvā agnidaṁ svāmighātukaṁ sudurbuddhiṁ iva nirlajjaṁ pāpakr̥ttamaṁ mām dhik astu||

Rama Tika says- sītām acintayitvā vismr̥tya anyatrānītvē ityarthaḥ| agnidam agnayē dadāti agniṁ dadāti vastumātrē kṣipati vā , ata ēva svāmi ghātakaṁ ataēva pāpakr̥ttamam pāpiśrēṣṭhaṁ māṁ dhig astu|

dagdhā tēna mayā bharturhataṁ kāryamajānatā||55.09||

sa|| iyaṁ laṁkā dagdhā yadi āryā jānakyāpi dagdhā | ajānatā mayā bhartuḥ kāryaṁ hataṁ||

if this Lanka is burnt fully
āryā jānakyāpi dagdhā -

yadarthamayamāraṁbhaḥ tatkāryamavasāditam|
mayā hi dahatā laṁkāṁ na sītā parirakṣitā||55.10||

sa|| yadarthaṁ ayaṁ (kāryaṁ) āraṁbhaḥ tat kāryaṁ avasāditaṁ| laṁkāṁ dahatā mayā sītā na parirakṣitā||

sa|| mama prajñā viparyayāt tat kāryaṁ vihataṁ yadi mamāpi ihaiva prāṇasanyāsaḥ adya rōcatē||

sa|| adya agnau nipatāmi | ahōsvit baḍabāmukhē ahō śarīraṁ sāgaravāsināṁ sattvānāṁ dadmi ||

sa|| dharmātmanaḥ amita tējasaḥ tasya bhāryāṁ svacāritrābhiguptāṁ tāṁ pāvakaḥ spraṣṭaṁ na arhati hi||
